GÉANT Infoshare: European Time and Frequency Services - Principles, Challenges and Use Cases

Starts

(Timezone - Europe/Brussels)
Description

"Time & Frequency (T&F) transport as an optical service has become a hot topic for the past ten years, mainly boosted by a dramatic improvement in performance. National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) in collaboration with NRENs have demonstrated three orders of magnitude higher stability of time and frequency services than any existing commercial service over distances of at least 1,500 km, offering tremendous potential for new services in a wide range of scientific, societal and economic domains.

The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) for such T&F services is in some cases now approaching 8 (complete and qualified) or 9 (proven in operational environment), while the growth of metrological links all around the world has motivated more and more optical equipment vendors to integrate T&F features into their product portfolios. However, there is no one-fits-all solution for how to deploy  T&F services. Rather, there are multiple T&F setups (unidirectional, bidirectional, quasi-bidirectional), parts of the spectrum (S-, C-, L-Band or in between), each dictated by the distinctive needs and requirements of the networks and the end-user applications.

Following on from our White Paper "Distributing New Performant Time and Frequency Services over NREN Networks", this Infoshare will have an end-users oriented point of view and we will present the different services/methods currently available for implementation, review the situation in the European NRENs and present the current research and innovation projects (CLONETS-DS, TiFOON) working on the design of the future pan T/F European network. We want to show that implementing T/F services in an NREN environment is not only doable but safe and controlled.

This event will be followed by a second Infoshare dedicated to T&F services practical implementations and the challenges for European NRENs and the research community."

The VC parameters will be given soon (the password will be shared with the registered attendees before the Infoshare).
The Infoshare will be recorded.

Why are optical T/F services so popular? 20m

This presentation aims to overview why there is a such a worldwide enthusiasm for new optical Time and Frequency services. Dr Harald Schnatz (PTB) will present the historical background of these new services and why they could be so usefull in scientific, societal and economic domains.

Time and Frequency services for end-users 20m

While the number of potential T/F end-users keeps growing, several techniques have been deployed (optical carrier techniques using different wavelength, modulation techniques, unidirectional, bidirectional...) Jani Myyry will give us an overview of the existing techniques and help us understand the main differences (advantages and drawbacks) in different scenarios.

Time and frequency requirements for radio astronomical interferometry 15m

Interferometry is a technique in radio astronomy where the signals of multiple radio telescopes are combined, creating a single virtual telescope with a much improved resolution. This requires the transport of large amounts of data, and the distribution of a very stable reference frequency and timing signal to each of the receptors. In this presentation I will highlight several examples and their results, such as our use of an improved White Rabbit to distribute reference signals for VLBI observations.

Speaker: Mr Paul Boven (JIVE "Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC")

T&F Research and Innovation projects (CLONETS-DS, TIFOON) 10m

CLONETS-DS aims to establish a pan-European time and frequency reference system as a European Research Infrastructure to serve the science community. It will follow the recommandations of TiFOON's technical project which will advance fibre-based frequency transfer capabilities in Europe towards a universal tool for time and frequency metrology by developing combined time and frequency techniques with enhanced performance, while ensuring compatibility with optical telecommunication networks.

        Speaker: Mr Wojbor Bogacki (PSNC)

Current T&F situation in NREN networks 40m

Optical Time and Frequency networks do already exist in the NREN community. In this presentation, Josef Vojtech (CESNET) will present some existing setups underlying their differences, choices of architecture and objectives. We hope this will encourage NREN that are not familiar with optical Time and Frequency to get in touch with this new type of fibre usage.

        Speaker: Dr Josef Vojtech (CESNET)
