Description

Managing a Campus network means dealing with heterogenous devices and tools, making the automation and orchestration of the configuration and management of the network vital to succeed. In this context, several NRENs and institutions started to offer Campus Network Management as a Service (CNaaS) to their connected institutions a few years ago. During these years, the service has evolved from being a completely new experience that required an initial intense work on automation and definition of the services under the CNaaS umbrella to a more mature service that can change and include new services. The usage of continuous development and improvement as well as the integration of different software tools and vendors have been key to address the challenges coming from the diversity of equipment and  the needs of the users. In this session, the latest news of the NRENs offering CNaaS services will be shared, together with lessons learnt and ideas for the future.

      CNaaS in Norway – lessons learned after three years of operations

      After three years of operations, the Norwegian NREN Sikt currently has 10 operational CNaaS customers. The service has been continuously developed and improved. After countless hours of hard work (read: fun) we have gained quite a bit of experience. This talk will elaborate on where we are now and what is next on our TODO. What are our ambitions for the future? Can the service scale indefinitely?

      SURF is actively working on a pilot of a new customer service: SURFwired. This product will be placed alongside our current product SURFwireless under the umbrella concept called SURF Campus network as a Service. This presentation will be an overview of our portfolio concept and the pilot of the SURFwired service at SURF.

      Automating the Campus Network with NSO

      The University of Michigan has a network of over 4000 switches and routers with dozens of different platforms and device types. This scale and heterogeneity pose a serious challenge when it comes to programmatically pushing network device configurations. We settled on using Cisco NSO (Network Service Orchestrator) as a platform and are in the early stages of productionizing its usage. We will cover why we selected NSO, how we are using it, and our experiences so far.
