Description

The increasing usage of data cloud services, IoT and new network services  is accelerating the usage of automation and orchestration at all levels. Some NRENs started the journey to automation long time ago. Is your NREN prepared for it?

Network engineers are usually very busy operating the network, and starting the whole process to efficiently automate and orchestrate tasks can take so long that the benefits may seem too far away. But automation is coming anyway, and you need to be prepared. It's a mindset change!

There are several ways in which the GÉANT project can help you in this journey. In this Infoshare, we will give an overview of how and will specifically present:

1) The study around architectures, taking the TMF Open Digital Architecture  (ODA) principles and "big blocks" as a blueprint that can be used to map any organisations' architecture, while keeping the flexibility to choose how to implement processes into each domain.

2) The Orchestration, Automation and Virtualisation Training, prepared by members of the GÉANT community for the community, with different itineraries, from the management to the network engineer, starting with introductory and practical capsules.

This Infoshare was held on December 16th, 2020 and was be recorded. You can find the recording in the GÉANT channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7ntyKS2UJw

Introduction: Why Orchestration, Automation and Virtualisation? 10m

Description of the reasons behind the work in OAV: the survey among the NRENs showed a huge interest, but not all the NRENs are ready to start the journey into automation. The Consensus Building Group in GN4-3 WP6 T2 aims to help the NRENs offering them resources such as a common terminology, a blueprint architecture, mapping of their architectures to this blueprint and training for their teams, among others.

Orchestration, Automation and Virtualisation: Architectures 20m

Explanation of the different commonalities and differences of several architectures, the principles that apply to an architecture, and the selection of the TMF Open Digital Architecture (ODA) as a blueprint.

Speakers: Mrs Sonja Filiposka (UKIM - MARNET), Mrs Susanne Naegele-Jackson (FAU - DFN)

Mapping NRENs' architectures to a Blueprint 20m

Each organisation has a different structure and offers different services to their users. This diversity makes it difficult to find a single architecture to make their networks and services interoperable. Nevertheless, there are some principles and common ideas that can be used to find ways of understanding and pave the way for this interoperability. The TMF Open digital Architecture (ODA) defines a functional architecture that can help many NREN. In this presentation, the mapping of some NRENs architectures will be presented.

Speakers: Iacovos Ioannou (CYNET), Roman Łapacz (PSNC), Mrs Sonja Filiposka (UKIM - MARNET)

Everything you Wanted to Ask About Orchestration, Automation and Virtualisation: Time to Ask 20m

The internet is full of articles, videos and recommendations about automation, orchestration and virtualisation (OAV). However, it is difficult to find a training path that is adaptable to the needs of the research and education networks.

The GÉANT project has prepared a training for these institutions that want to start they OAV journey, but are not really sure on how to do it. Structured in different training paths, the training is intended for network engineers but also for managers who would like to know more about the reasons to go to automation. It's not just about automating the usual manual tasks. It's a mindset change involving the whole organisation.

This presentations introduces the Training, the fist phases learning units and the OAV Training wiki.
