e-IRG Workshop under Hungarian EU Presidency

The e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) organises two open workshops every year, each under the auspices of the corresponding presidency of the EU Council. The Hungarian EU Presidency e-IRG Workshop is organised as a hybrid event hosted by KIFÜ, and will bring together e-Infrastructure stakeholders in Budapest, Hungary, as well as online and worldwide. 

The event's overarching theme is "The Role of National e-Infrastructures in the Europen Research Ecosystem". A set of sub-topics was proposed by the e-IRG delegations and e-Infrastructure Assembly and the top-3 voted ones have been chosen for the program. These are the following: 

1. Continued national and EU investments in e-Infrastructures to ensure their long-term sustainability
   • Member States are heavily investing in national and European e-Infrastructures, including among others network enhancements, High-Performance Computing and AI-facilities, data storage, and Open Science initiatives. These investments support cutting-edge research and reinforce Europe’s role in global research infrastructures. Maintaining the financial, operational, and environmental sustainability of research infrastructures is crucial. This includes investments in energy-efficient infrastructures, ongoing modernisation of systems, and ensuring long-term viability.
     Under this topic developments at the national and EU levels will be reviewed, both positive (good practices) and also challenges and how these were overcome or not in specific countries/regions.
      
2. Major e-Infrastructure developments at the national or EU levels (connectivity, computing (HPC/HTC/AI), FAIR data/open science)
   • Member States and e-Infra Assembly members will report on major developments in their countries or at the EU level, including good practices and challenges faced. And also, how the EU landscape may be affected. Recently ESFRI published its Landscape Analysis as a separate document from the ESFRI Roadmap, which also reports on developments in the digital field (e-Infrastructures). 
     Under this topic developments at the national and EU levels will be reviewed, both success stories (e.g. good practices) and also challenges faced, and how these were overcome or not in specific countries/regions. This topic is closely linked with the above topic.
      
3. Preparation for EOSC Federation - Interest in EOSC nodes
   • Countries are preparing to become nodes in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) federation, aligning their national infrastructures with EOSC’s technical standards. This involves enabling cross-border data sharing and creating federated cloud services to support collaborative scientific research.
     Under this topic developments at the national and EU levels will be reviewed, both success stories (e.g. good practices) and also challenges faced, and how these were overcome or not in specific countries/regions.

Each e-IRG delegation will reflect on the above three (3) topics, while similar reflections will be made by the major EU e-Infrastructures and related initiatives. There will be two sessions under the Hungarian e-IRG workshop, as presented below.
